Siblings Robin and Marty Lawson combine science and art to form Lumen Electronic Jewelry, whose LED jewelry will light up GeekCraft Expo Midwest's Fall Mall October 14 and 15 at the Madison Masonic Center!
We chatted with Robin about what's new since they exhibited at last spring's GeekCraft Expo Midwest, their latest designs, and what they're planning to wow attendees with this year!
GeekCraft Expo: What have you been up to since we last talked in the spring?
Robin Lawson: We finished the re-design of our Butterfly necklace. And we added more versions of our popular square design, available as pins and cufflinks.
GCE: For newcomers to your work, can you give a brief overview of your pieces?
RL: Lumen blurs the line between science and art with unique and strangely organic custom-designed circuit board jewelry. Our LED jewelry is powered by tiny solar panels incorporated into every design. So no batteries are required, ever.
GCE: Do you have any new designs you’re excited about?
RL: Yes, we are super excited about our re-designed Butterfly. We made it 30% smaller per customer feedback, and decreased the solar charge time from 45 to 20 minutes. Yeah science!
GCE: Where do you get your design inspiration?
RL: From geek culture and the natural world around us. We grew up in the woods in rural Wisconsin, surrounded by a lot of wildlife. Not octopuses, but definitely foxes and butterflies. It's fun to re-create them in circuit board form.
GCE: I noticed you now have rings—have you had anyone use your jewelry as engagement rings?
RL: No but that would be awesome! Our rings have a 3D printed nylon ring base that is comfortable and adjustable to many sizes.
GCE: What are your favorite geeky characters?
RL: I can't speak for Marty, but I have a serious fangirl crush on Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman. Swoon. And I am really looking forward to the Black Panther movie.
GCE: What kinds of things will you be bringing to GeekCraft Expo Midwest’s Fall Mall this year?
RL: All the blinky. We also have a second butterfly color that should be ready by October.
Our thanks to Robin for taking time away from designing to answer all of our questions! Don't miss out: RSVP for GeekCraft Expo Midwest's Fall Mall now. Are you geeky and crafty? We've got just a few spaces left, so fill out an application ASAP.
